    Two days after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Harold Speed saw the desperation playing out on television and took action.

    The airboat manufacturer from the southern Oklahoma town of Hendrix began calling pals who had bought his airboats and enlisted nine in his crew of rescuers.

    On Sept. 1, they caravanned to New Orleans. One week later, Speed headed home a changed man.

    "If a guy's got a heart, it'll make him cry from what I've seen down there. I feel sorry for the people, said Speed, a plain-spoken fisherman who described his surreal journeys past corpses while trying to talk folks out of their homes.

    It was a job that required persuasion and a bullet resistant vest.

    His experience helping victims of Florida's Hurricane Andrew in 1992 paled in comparison.
